Flash Masters global leaderboard champion Tim Kamppinen - the most decorated member in Flash Masters history with eight Gold and 22 Silver awards, joins us to share the images, setups, and creative thinking behind his extraordinary and consistently award-winning work.
Tim Kamppinen is at the top of the Flash Masters 2023 leaderboard. He has been since almost the beginning. With 8 Gold awards and 22 Silver awards, he is the most decorated member in Flash Masters history and in this stream: one of our very first member-focused streams, we finally get to find out how he does it.
Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Tim has been shooting weddings since 2009 and has developed a deeply considered approach to flash that balances technical precision with genuine creative flair. His images are instantly recognisable: cool blue tones; dramatic gel setups; creative composites and in this stream he shares the thinking behind them in wonderfully honest detail.
This is also a special stream for another reason: it is the first time we have turned the spotlight on a Flash Masters member rather than an ambassador. And Tim could not have been a more perfect person to go first.
Brilliant images, brilliant conversation, and a very impressive moustache. 🎉

I'm a photographer based in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the United States and I've been photographing weddings since 2009.My work is vivid and dramatic; I try to capture the emotions of the wedding day with as much visual impact as possible, which very often means using some form of off-camera light source.I have been obsessed with lighting from the very early stages when photography was still just a hobby. I remember reading the "Strobist" blog, buying used Nikon SB-28 flashes and cheaply made radio triggers from eBay, and making my friends pose for me while I figured out how to light a portrait. The gear has evolved tremendously since that point but the principles of light and shadow remain the same; I still get excited when I'm able to manipulate them to transform a scene and create images that otherwise would never have been possible.
