FLASH MASTERS MEMBERS SPOTLIGHT

MARTIN HOBBY

Where in the world are you based? Where is the most exciting location you have shot at?

I am based in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, UK

When did you set up your photography business and what genres of photography do you shoot?

I set up in 2009, but have been a pro photographer for a lot longer working for other photo studios. These days most of my work is commercial portraits and headshots, along with general branding photography for businesses.

What would you say has been your most memorable photography job and why?

Photographing the band 'Crystal Fighters' play a rave in cave, in the Pyrenees Mountains for Q Magazine, was probably my favourite commission.

What is your all time favourite photograph you have taken and why?

Well it would have to be one of the many photos I've taken of my son. There are a couple of him shown here as they were recently awarded silvers. Work wise, it would probably be the photo below of the punk band Gallows. The reason it's one of my favourites is because I didn't have time to set up any flashes, it was a very quick shoot before they played at gig at the 100 Club in London around 10 years ago.I always used to use flash for my music photography, but I think in this instance the shot looks more gritty and "real" because I haven't used flash. The fact that Wade, the vocalist, is right up close and out of focus gives the photos some real intensity, which I feel matches their sound. It opened my eyes to a different way of thinking, not everything needs to be perfectly lit for it to a great photo. Sorry, probably not what I should have said for Flash masters!

Reveal one thing you keep in your camera bag that people may not expect to be there. Why is it there?

Stick on Googley eyes, because it's fun to add them to pictures or ornaments when I'm out and about, or in venues and offices.

What is the biggest reason you like using off camera flash?

I like using using flash because I have complete control over it. It doesn't matter what the weather is doing outside, I know I can still get great shots anywhere in any location with a couple of flashheads.

What is the best part/biggest benefit of being a Flash Masters member?

Seeing other work and being inspired, and the feeling you get when you win awards!

If you could give one piece of advice to anyone starting out on their flash photography journey, what would it be?

Don't let technique get in the way of a great photo. Keep it simple.
