Neil Redfern: Off-Camera Flash Part 1: Everything You Need to Know from Scratch Including the Equipment, Triggers, and Modifiers Neil Actually Uses

No assumptions. No jargon. No intimidating technical leaps. This is Neil Redfern's introduction to off-camera flash, and it starts from the very beginning.

In this first of a two-part solo stream, Neil takes photographers through everything they need to understand before they fire a single flash on a wedding day, including the cameras he uses and why, the speedlights in his bag and what each is good for, the triggers he relies on, and the modifiers that have earned a permanent place in his kit. He explains not just what he uses but why, and is consistent throughout that this is his approach, not the only approach and that there are no silly questions.

This stream was born from a recognition that off-camera flash can feel intimidating, and Neil's mission here is simple: to strip all of that away. Watch this before part two. 🎉

The top 5 things you will learn by watching this stream:

  1. What speedlights Neil uses, why he chooses them, and when he reaches for each one. Neil walks through his Godox V860s and AD200s explaining the practical trade-offs between power and portability, and why for the kind of shooting he does, smaller and simpler wins almost every time.
  2. How modern Godox triggers work and why the built-in receiver changed everything. Neil explains the X2T trigger system and why the fact that modern Godox speedlights have receivers built in: something that wasn't always the case, has made off-camera flash dramatically more accessible and reliable.
  3. How Neil approaches modifiers and why he doesn't use more power than he needs. Neil shares his modifier choices and explains his philosophy of shooting in lower ambient conditions rather than trying to overpower bright natural light and why this approach makes off-camera flash simpler and more consistent.
  4. Why the camera you shoot on is almost irrelevant to off-camera flash. Neil makes an important point early in the stream - the camera body matters far less than understanding light, exposure, and flash placement and frames the whole stream around technique rather than gear.
  5. Why starting from scratch and assuming no knowledge is the fastest route to genuine confidence with flash. Neil shares his philosophy on teaching flash and why he believes the biggest barrier for most photographers is not technical difficulty but accumulated intimidation and how clearing that away is the single most important first step.

Neil Redfern

I am a off camera flash obsessive wedding photographer based in the sunny North West of England. I shot my first wedding in 2006 and since then I have shot around 500 weddings across the UK and overseas. For the past 10 years I have also been running wedding photography workshops and in 2020 I set up my Patreon, which has now grown to a community of 250 photographers all over the world. I also love to make videos for my YouTube channel, which again is all focussed on wedding photography education and ‘How I Shot This’ off camera flash videos. I am also very proud to be an Ambassador for MagMod, Pic-Time and Studio Ninja.Myself and Helen Williams set up Flash Masters in September 2022 and I am so incredibly proud of what Flash Masters will become. A huge thank you to all of our Ambassadors, Sponsors and every single member of the community for helping to make this a reality. I am so excited to see where this journey takes us all!
