Neil Redfern Off-Camera Flash Part 2: Exposing for Highlights, Real Wedding Setups & Why You Don't Need a Fancy Venue to Create Something Special

If you watched part one, you are ready for this. If you haven't — stop here, go watch part one first, and come back. Neil is very clear about that.

In this second solo stream, Neil picks up exactly where part one left off — moving from the fundamentals of equipment and triggers into the real-world application of off-camera flash across a full wedding day. He walks through how he exposes for highlights to create the potential for flash, takes viewers through real examples from his own weddings, and explains his specific setups for speeches and dancing — the same simple approach he uses every time, in every venue, regardless of conditions.

This stream is also notable for its energy and warmth. Neil is genuinely passionate about making flash feel accessible to every photographer, and that comes through in every minute. A brilliant companion to part one. 🎉

The top 5 things you will learn by watching this stream:

  1. How to expose for the highlights to reveal the potential in any scene. Neil walks through his core approach - setting exposure for the brightest part of a scene so everything else falls into shadow and explains how to train yourself to see light and shadow the way a camera does.
  2. How Neil creates his signature speech photographs using the same simple setup every time. Neil shares his go-to speech setup: the same configuration he uses at every wedding, in every venue, summer or winter and explains why consistency beats complexity.
  3. How to use off-camera flash to create something striking from a completely blank or ordinary space. Neil shows examples from his own weddings where there was nothing interesting in the environment and how flash transforms even the most boring venue into something visually compelling.
  4. How to create composite images using flash at receptions and dancing. Neil walks through the technique of shooting separate flash exposures and blending them in post, explaining the creative and practical reasons behind this approach.
  5. Why the community you learn from matters as much as the technique. Neil ends the stream with a genuinely moving reminder that everyone in the Flash Masters community has something to offer: that the most decorated ambassadors are still learning from members, and that sharing openly is what makes everyone better.

Neil Redfern

I am a off camera flash obsessive wedding photographer based in the sunny North West of England. I shot my first wedding in 2006 and since then I have shot around 500 weddings across the UK and overseas. For the past 10 years I have also been running wedding photography workshops and in 2020 I set up my Patreon, which has now grown to a community of 250 photographers all over the world. I also love to make videos for my YouTube channel, which again is all focussed on wedding photography education and ‘How I Shot This’ off camera flash videos. I am also very proud to be an Ambassador for MagMod, Pic-Time and Studio Ninja.Myself and Helen Williams set up Flash Masters in September 2022 and I am so incredibly proud of what Flash Masters will become. A huge thank you to all of our Ambassadors, Sponsors and every single member of the community for helping to make this a reality. I am so excited to see where this journey takes us all!
