Live with Neil Redfern: BTS, Live Editing in Lightroom and Photoshop & the Full Journey from Off-Camera Flash to Finished Image

This one is a little different and a lot of fun. Flash Masters co-founder Neil Redfern takes the hot seat himself, sharing behind-the-scenes video from 10 of his favourite recent images from weddings, shoots, and workshops, before live-editing a selection of them in Lightroom and Photoshop so you can see exactly how he gets from capture to final result.

Neil walks through his layer-based approach to off-camera flash starting with ambient light, exposing for the highlights, and then painting the couple in with flash in a way that is clear, practical, and genuinely demystifying. If you have ever found off-camera flash confusing, this stream will change that.

The live editing section is equally brilliant: full of tips on masking, brushes, generative fill, matching exposures, and how to blend plate shots - all explained in real time with real images.

This is a stream for photographers at every level, from complete beginners to those who just want to see how a very experienced photographer actually works in practice. Wonderfully honest, wonderfully useful. 🎉

The top 5 things you will learn by watching this stream:

  1. How to nail the layer-based approach to off-camera flash. Neil walks through his full process step by step: setting ambient exposure first, locking in layer one, and then using flash purely to light the couple in a way that finally makes it click.
  2. How to expose for highlights and avoid blowing them. Neil explains how he uses zebra lines and the histogram in-camera to nail his exposure every time, and why protecting your highlights is the single most important thing you can do.
  3. How to live edit a flash portrait from start to finish. Neil edits multiple images in real time in Lightroom and Photoshop including masking, brushes, vignettes, and generative fill - showing exactly how little editing a well-shot image actually needs.
  4. How to blend plate shots when your camera settings don't match. Neil reveals a brilliant and little-known Lightroom trick for matching exposures across two images when your shutter speed was slightly different between shots. A genuine time-saver.
  5. How to use light fall-off to create dramatic, beautiful portraits. Neil explains why keeping your light source close to the couple creates that beautiful fade-to-dark effect and why it is one of the simplest and most effective lighting techniques you can use.

Neil Redfern

I am a off camera flash obsessive wedding photographer based in the sunny North West of England. I shot my first wedding in 2006 and since then I have shot around 500 weddings across the UK and overseas. For the past 10 years I have also been running wedding photography workshops and in 2020 I set up my Patreon, which has now grown to a community of 250 photographers all over the world. I also love to make videos for my YouTube channel, which again is all focussed on wedding photography education and ‘How I Shot This’ off camera flash videos. I am also very proud to be an Ambassador for MagMod, Pic-Time and Studio Ninja.Myself and Helen Williams set up Flash Masters in September 2022 and I am so incredibly proud of what Flash Masters will become. A huge thank you to all of our Ambassadors, Sponsors and every single member of the community for helping to make this a reality. I am so excited to see where this journey takes us all!
