Live with Martin Hobby: Award-Winning Studio Photography, Corporate Headshots & What Happens When You Leave Martin Alone With a Camera

We are joined by the brilliant Martin Hobby - Flash Masters Studio Photographer of the Year, 25-time Silver Award winner, four-time Gold Award winner, and one of the most creative and consistently surprising photographers in our community.

Based in Cheshire, Martin has done pretty much everything in photography: weddings, pets, music, commercial work and has landed on corporate headshots and creative studio portraiture as his bread and butter. And honestly? Watching him work is a masterclass.

In this stream Martin walks us through his award-winning images, his self-portrait personal projects (which are genuinely unlike anything you've seen), and his surprisingly fascinating approach to corporate headshots including how he gets brilliant expressions from people who would rather be at the dentist.

This stream is funny, warm, packed with gold, and fair warning entirely impossible to predict. That is exactly what makes it so good.

We are so grateful to Martin for sharing so generously, and for being such a brilliant part of the Flash Masters community. 🎉

A huge thank you to Martin for sharing so much valuable information and inspiration to the community!

The top 5 things you will learn by watching this stream:

  1. How to get amazing expressions from corporate clients who don't want to be there. Martin shares his Sherlock Holmes-style approach to reading people quickly and his go-to techniques for getting great shots from even the most reluctant subjects — in under 10 minutes per person.
  2. How to create award-winning creative portraits with very simple gear. Martin walks through his Flash Masters Gold and Silver award images, showing just how much is possible with straightforward setups and a lot of creative thinking.
  3. Why personal projects are the key to staying creative. Martin explains how his self-portrait work — from Friday the 13th Christmas shoots to feather-filled fine art portraits — keeps his creative brain firing between client work.
  4. How to build a sustainable photography business around headshots. Martin talks through how he moved away from weddings into corporate headshot work and how it has given him a more consistent, enjoyable, and sustainable business model.
  5. How to get everything right in camera. Martin's behind-the-scenes footage is genuinely jaw-dropping — almost everything you see is straight out of camera, and he explains exactly how he does it.

Martin regularly holds sold-out Headshot Lighting Workshops in the UK each year. You can find out more about these here
