EVER LET THE VENUE STOP YOU AGAIN: DRU DODD'S HALO PACK CREATIVE PORTRAIT SYSTEM

Dru Dodd photographs weddings in the northeast of England. If you know the northeast of England, you know the weather. Unpredictable. Often wet. Rarely flattering. So Dru did what every creative photographer eventually does when faced with a limitation, he invented a solution.

The Halo Pack is a set of four custom-made copper rings that fit in your camera bag and allow you to create strikingly original bokeh effects with off-camera flash, wherever you are, whatever the conditions. Inspired by Sam Hurd's iconic copper ring technique and evolved into a complete, flash-powered portable system, Dru's Halo Pack has become his go-to creative tool at every wedding he shoots. And in this tutorial, he shares the whole thing with you.

The result? Creative, original portraits that genuinely look different from anything else, images that have never existed before, even if Dru has never shot at that venue before. If you've ever wanted to create something unique at every wedding, regardless of where it is or what the conditions are, this tutorial will show you how.

This is the tutorial that puts a new creative tool in your camera bag permanently. 📸

Top 5 Things You Will Learn

  1. What the Halo Pack is and how it was developed: Learn the origin of Dru's technique, how he evolved it from Sam Hurd's single copper ring into a complete four-ring flash-powered system, and why he made the specific design choices he did.
  2. How to use the Halo Pack with off-camera flash: Discover exactly how Dru positions his rings, sets up his flash and captures the specific bokeh effect that makes Halo Pack portraits so distinctive and eye-catching.
  3. Creating something unique at every wedding: Understand how Dru approaches each venue as an opportunity to create an image he's never made before, and how the Halo Pack gives him the creative freedom to do exactly that.
  4. Camera settings for the Halo Pack technique: Learn the specific settings Dru uses, aperture, shutter speed, ISO and flash power, to achieve the look he's going for, with guidance on how to adjust depending on conditions.
  5. Adapting the technique for different locations and lighting: Find out how Dru's system works whether he's shooting indoors or outdoors, in low light or bright conditions, and the modifications he makes to keep the results consistent.

Dru Dodd

I'm Dru, a wedding and commercial photographer based in Northumberland, England. I started out taking landscapes and images of the night sky during my PhD in Molecular Genetics and kind of fell into photographing weddings. As a result I love putting my couples in landscapes and taking images at night, using flash and pushing my cameras and flashes to their limits. I started off with Olymus 4/3rds, then went to Canon full frame and now shoot Sony mirrorless. I use Godox speedlites and strobes.
