Speeches are a goldmine for genuine, emotional moments but they're also one of the hardest parts of the day to light well. Neil Redfern shares the exact off-camera flash setup he's trusted at weddings for over 10 years.
Dark rooms. Back-lit top tables. Awkward layouts. Sound familiar? Wedding speeches are full of the moments your clients will treasure forever and full of the lighting challenges that can make them a nightmare to photograph.
In this in-depth 75 minute tutorial, Neil Redfern walks you through the exact off-camera flash setup he's been using, and teaching at nearly 50 workshops, for over a decade. Filmed on location at the stunning Salt House in Staffordshire, Neil demonstrates his system live at a real wedding venue, showing you how to adapt it for both long and round top tables; how to choose between direct flash and bounce and exactly which equipment you need.
The result? Clean, consistent, directional light on your speakers and guests: whatever the room, whatever the conditions. Once this system is in place, you can forget about the light entirely and focus on capturing the laughter, the tears, and the hugs. Neil and Helen use this setup together at every wedding they shoot, and after watching this, you will too.
This is the tutorial that will genuinely change how you photograph speeches. 🎉
Top 5 Things You Will Learn
I am a off camera flash obsessive wedding photographer based in the sunny North West of England. I shot my first wedding in 2006 and since then I have shot around 500 weddings across the UK and overseas. For the past 10 years I have also been running wedding photography workshops and in 2020 I set up my Patreon, which has now grown to a community of 250 photographers all over the world. I also love to make videos for my YouTube channel, which again is all focussed on wedding photography education and ‘How I Shot This’ off camera flash videos. I am also very proud to be an Ambassador for MagMod, Pic-Time and Studio Ninja.Myself and Helen Williams set up Flash Masters in September 2022 and I am so incredibly proud of what Flash Masters will become. A huge thank you to all of our Ambassadors, Sponsors and every single member of the community for helping to make this a reality. I am so excited to see where this journey takes us all!
