In this tutorial, the first of his 'Something from Nothing' series, Neil Redfern shows how you can create vibrant and colourful foreground bokeh using off-camera flash and tin (aluminium) foil.
In this tutorial, the first of a new Flash Masters Tutorial series called 'Something from Nothing', Neil Redfern talks through how you can use off-camera flash and tin foil (or perhaps aluminium foil where you live!) to create vibrant and colourful foreground bokeh.
The 'Something from Nothing' series is all about inspiring you with ideas to create creative and unique portraits when the environment or location which you are in offers you (seemingly) very little. These portrait photographs can be recreated anywhere and can give you inspiration when it appears as though the location you are shooting is 'boring'. For many of the shots in this series all you need is a bit of space.
As you will see in this tutorial, Neil talks through his entire setup and then demonstrates the different looks which can be achieved with the same setup but by using different focal lengths. You will see Neil using a 35mm, 85mm and 105mm lens with the same setup to show you the different looks.
As with all the tutorials in the Something from Nothing series, the last chapter sees Neil demonstrating how he edits one of his favourite photographs from this tutorial in Lightroom.
We hope you enjoy the tutorial and gives you inspiration for when you are next shooting in a 'boring' location!

I am a off camera flash obsessive wedding photographer based in the sunny North West of England. I shot my first wedding in 2006 and since then I have shot around 500 weddings across the UK and overseas. For the past 10 years I have also been running wedding photography workshops and in 2020 I set up my Patreon, which has now grown to a community of 250 photographers all over the world. I also love to make videos for my YouTube channel, which again is all focussed on wedding photography education and ‘How I Shot This’ off camera flash videos. I am also very proud to be an Ambassador for MagMod, Pic-Time and Studio Ninja.Myself and Helen Williams set up Flash Masters in September 2022 and I am so incredibly proud of what Flash Masters will become. A huge thank you to all of our Ambassadors, Sponsors and every single member of the community for helping to make this a reality. I am so excited to see where this journey takes us all!
