Overview

THE MOST BORING LOCATION YOU'VE EVER SEEN, AND THE MOST STUNNING PORTRAITS YOU'VE EVER MADE: NEIL REDFERN'S TIN FOIL TECHNIQUE

You don't need a beautiful venue. You don't need ideal natural light. You don't even need a studio. What you need is a creative idea, a flash, and the knowledge that off-camera lighting can transform literally any location, even a garage, into something extraordinary.

This is the first tutorial in Neil Redfern's Something from Nothing series: a collection of techniques specifically designed for wedding photographers who've been booked to create unique, creative portraits at venues that aren't offering them anything to work with. In this episode, Neil shoots in his own garage, one of the least inspiring locations imaginable, using tin foil as a creative element alongside off-camera flash, to produce portraits that stop people in their tracks.

The result? Genuinely creative, visually striking portraits that prove your environment is never an excuse. Once you see what Neil creates here, and how he does it, you'll start to look at every venue, however boring, with completely different eyes. And in the final chapter, Neil walks you through how he edited his favourite image from the shoot in Lightroom.

This is the tutorial that removes every excuse you've ever had about location. 🎉

Top 5 Things You Will Learn

  1. The creative concept behind Something from Nothing: Understand the thinking that drives this entire series, why Neil developed it, who it's for, and how the techniques here apply directly to the real-world challenge of shooting at uninspiring wedding venues.
  2. How to use tin foil as a creative photography prop: Discover exactly how Neil incorporates tin foil into his lighting and composition, and the specific visual effect it creates, and why it works so well with off-camera flash.
  3. The lighting setup for this technique: Learn which flash, modifier and settings Neil uses for this shoot, and how he positions everything to create the striking, directional light that makes these portraits so distinctive.
  4. How to create something from nothing on a wedding day: Take the principles from this garage shoot and understand how to translate them to a real venue, seeing creative potential in spaces that most photographers would walk past.
  5. The Lightroom edit explained: Follow Neil's editing process for one of his favourite images from the shoot, from import to final image, understanding the specific adjustments that complete the look of this technique.

Neil Redfern

I am a off camera flash obsessive wedding photographer based in the sunny North West of England. I shot my first wedding in 2006 and since then I have shot around 500 weddings across the UK and overseas. For the past 10 years I have also been running wedding photography workshops and in 2020 I set up my Patreon, which has now grown to a community of 250 photographers all over the world. I also love to make videos for my YouTube channel, which again is all focussed on wedding photography education and ‘How I Shot This’ off camera flash videos. I am also very proud to be an Ambassador for MagMod, Pic-Time and Studio Ninja.Myself and Helen Williams set up Flash Masters in September 2022 and I am so incredibly proud of what Flash Masters will become. A huge thank you to all of our Ambassadors, Sponsors and every single member of the community for helping to make this a reality. I am so excited to see where this journey takes us all!
