One of MagMod's most underused products. And one of the most effective. Neil Redfern brings the MagMod Magbeam back into the spotlight and shows you the jaw-dropping creative portraits it can produce from any blank space.
A blank wall. A speedlight. A MagMod Magbeam. And suddenly the background behind your couple looks like nothing they have ever seen before.
The Magbeam has been around for years, but most photographers leave it sitting in a drawer. In the third tutorial of Neil Redfern's Something from Nothing series, that changes. Neil takes this underused piece of kit into his garage (with the ever-brilliant model Olga) and shows you exactly how to use the Magbeam's mask and gel system to project shapes and colours onto a background, creating portraits that are bold, dynamic and completely unlike anything a venue could ever offer you.
Shot across multiple lighting setups and building from a single light all the way to a three-light rig with coloured gels, this tutorial takes you through every stage of the process at real shooting pace. Neil covers the equipment, the positioning, the flash power choices and the creative decisions that take this from a cool experiment to a genuinely wow-worthy result. And yes, the final chapter includes a silhouette moment that Neil describes as one of his favourite tricks in the whole 'Something from Nothing' series.
This is the tutorial that will make you dig out your Magbeam and never put it away again. 🎉
Top 5 Things You Will Learn
I am a off camera flash obsessive wedding photographer based in the sunny North West of England. I shot my first wedding in 2006 and since then I have shot around 500 weddings across the UK and overseas. For the past 10 years I have also been running wedding photography workshops and in 2020 I set up my Patreon, which has now grown to a community of 250 photographers all over the world. I also love to make videos for my YouTube channel, which again is all focussed on wedding photography education and ‘How I Shot This’ off camera flash videos. I am also very proud to be an Ambassador for MagMod, Pic-Time and Studio Ninja.Myself and Helen Williams set up Flash Masters in September 2022 and I am so incredibly proud of what Flash Masters will become. A huge thank you to all of our Ambassadors, Sponsors and every single member of the community for helping to make this a reality. I am so excited to see where this journey takes us all!
