Overview

Ever wondered what a whole wedding day looks like through Neil Redfern’s eyes? Not the highlights. The entire day.

Kim and Glynn are multi award-winning photographers, high up the Flash Masters leaderboard, and good friends of ours. So when they asked Helen and Neil to shoot their wedding, the pressure was very real.

In this stream, Neil walks you through the whole day, clip by clip, with behind the scenes footage, out of camera files and finished edits side by side. It’s not just flash either. You’ll see how he settles into a room before photographing people, why he always grabs the safe shot before trying anything creative, and how two minutes of setup puts a real moment in the best possible light.

Then there’s the ceremony. A glass room, blazing sun, and light hitting the couple from the waist down. Neil shows exactly how they handled what he calls a natural light photographer’s worst nightmare, and answers the question everyone asks: isn’t flash distracting?

From a reflection technique learned at Jeff Tisman’s workshop, to portraits by the bins (yes, really), to a sunset composite as the light disappeared, this is a full wedding day, broken down shot by shot.

5. Top 5 things you will learn

  1. The safe shot rule. Why Neil never goes for a creative shot until he’s banked a safe one, and how that frees him up to experiment.
  2. How to set up real moments. Get genuine reactions while choosing where they happen, so the light and the story are on your side.
  3. How to rescue a ceremony in harsh sun. The setup that saved the day, and why it didn’t distract anyone.
  4. Neil’s “triggers”. The things he spots in a scene that instantly tell him which creative shot to go for.
  5. Why the brightest part of your photo is rarely the face. Get this right and you’ll have so much more freedom in the edit.

This is a truly unique opportunity to see how Neil Redfern works on a wedding day. No secrets or gatekeeping. Challenges and tough bits included.

Neil Redfern

I am a off camera flash obsessive wedding photographer based in the sunny North West of England. I shot my first wedding in 2006 and since then I have shot around 500 weddings across the UK and overseas. For the past 10 years I have also been running wedding photography workshops and in 2020 I set up my Patreon, which has now grown to a community of 250 photographers all over the world. I also love to make videos for my YouTube channel, which again is all focussed on wedding photography education and ‘How I Shot This’ off camera flash videos. I am also very proud to be an Ambassador for MagMod, Pic-Time and Studio Ninja.Myself and Helen Williams set up Flash Masters in September 2022 and I am so incredibly proud of what Flash Masters will become. A huge thank you to all of our Ambassadors, Sponsors and every single member of the community for helping to make this a reality. I am so excited to see where this journey takes us all!
