In this 90 minute tutorial we are joined by our 2024 'Studio Photographer of the Year' Martin Hobby, who very kindly takes us behind the scenes for a creative portrait session in the studio - sharing his favourite setups and creative portrait techniques
In this bumper tutorial, we join our 2024 Flash Masters Studio Photographer of the Year, Martin Hobby, for a full creative portrait session in the studio - and wow, what Martin shares in this tutorial is absolutely invaluable.
DECEMBER 3 2025: PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU ARE READING THIS MESSAGE, ONLY PART OF THIS TUTORIAL HAS BEEN UPLOADED, PLEASE CHECK BACK IN A FEW DAYS FOR THE REMAINING CHAPTERS
Martin, who runs a successful commercial photography business in the Cheshire in the UK, starts by sharing his approach to shooting in a photography studio, the equipment he uses and his basic setup for creating beautifully lit headshots.
Then the fun really begins as Martin shares with us lots of different setups and creative techniques (including how he uses long exposures, gels and filters) which have earned him 30+ Flash Masters awards.
Everything is filmed live and Martin talks us through every step of his process - this tutorial is gold and we promise will inspire you to want to get your camera out straight away and start practicing some of the creative portrait techniques you will see!
We cannot thank Martin enough for sharing so much with us in this tutorial. We are honoured to have him in the Flash Masters community. Not only is he an extremely talented photographer and educator, but he is also one of the nicest photographers in the industry.
For extra Martin Hobby content, please also check out the Snapshot he recorded for us!

I am based in Cheshire in the UK, I photographed my first wedding way back in 1993 alongside my Dad who was also a professional wedding photographer. These days I am mainly photographing headshots and commercial portraits. I also like punk rock, skateboarding and cider.
